Mayor Bloomberg’s Ban of Super-Sized Sodas is Gaining Support from Influential People

Recently, Mayor Michael Bloomberg (New York City) proposed banning the sale of sugary drinks over 16 ounces in restaurants, concession stands, movie theaters, etc. in the city. I am all for this as people tend to eat or drink whatever is in front of them, even if it is too much. There is nothing stopping people from buying more if they want, so I don’t see any personal liberty issue here. Recently, the mayor has received support from Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and Oprah Winfrey’s fitness adviser Bob Greene. In my opinion, public officials should make proposals like this. After all, we are all paying for obesity. Anything that contributes to weight loss is a win. It comes up for a vote soon and I hope it passes. Check out these articles with more details here:

Here are 2 Stories on Different Sides of the Low Carb and Atkins Diet Debate

New Study Supports Validity of Low Carb Diets Like the Atkins Diet

A recent study of 1141 obese people on low carb diets lost about 18 pounds on average in less than a year. They also improved inflammation markers like C-Reactive Protein and improved their triglycerides, blood pressure, and cholesterol. Its hard to argue with these results, and I know there are a variety of ways to achieve the weight loss you are looking for.  My only concern is the massive amount of protein and lack of vital nutrients that fruits and vegetables provide. I will look for more studies on the long-term health of people that maintain a low card diet. Here is an article with more details:

Are there Possible Problems with the Dukan Diet (A Low Carb Diet)

Dr. Dukan of France promotes the Dukan diet, which is similar to the Atkins Diet in that it is a high protein, low carb diet.  These diets do defy logic and common sense, as well as the prevailing thoughts and scientific evidence for consuming a significant amount of fruits and vegetables.  They have always been controversial.  The other issue with these diets is the incredibly high amount of animal proteins consumed.  Here is an interesting article that offers a counter-point to the pro-Atkins article above:   Article on the Dukan Diet  I will still reserve judgement until I review the long-term studies on low carb diets.  What do you think?  What have your experiences been with a low carb diet?
