Does Drinking Water Help You Lose Weight

Does Drinking Water Help You Lose Weight? – Introduction

Drinking enough water is essential to the proper functioning of your body, but does drinking water help you lose weight? We will answer that question in this post. First, a little background. Over 70 percent of the human body is made up of water, so whether or not your are dieting, you should drink enough water to replace what you lose through urination, sweating and breathing.

Drinking Water to Lose Weight

So, does drinking water help you lose weight? The short answer is yes. A recent study showed that overweight dieters that drank two cups of water before eating each meal lost 5 pounds more than those that didn’t. The same study also showed that this increased water consumption actually helped these dieters keep the weight off long term. So drinking enough water not only helps you lose weight, but helps you keep it off too!

How does Water Help You Lose Weight

Water has a lot going for it to help with weight loss. First, water helps you to feel full, which is an especially good reason to drink it before meals. Second, when starting a weight loss program, water helps clear out the toxins in your body and aid in the fat burning process. So, you are actually helping to cleanse and detox the colon when you drink enough water. (See my best cleanse for weight loss post for more details on that.) Next, the first weight you lose on a new diet plan is water weight. So, if you don’t drink enough water to restore these lost fluids, you may feel lethargic and the electrolytes in your body will not be balanced. Also, this may leave the body dehydrated and unable to perform its functions optimally. Dehydration will also make your skin appear unhealthy; affecting how your look. So, even though you will be in the bathroom a little more at first, your body will adapt and thank you for the extra water.

Drinking Water as Part of an Overall Weight Loss Plan

The whole idea of a weight loss program is to help the body to burn fat. This is done ideally in two ways. First, accelerate the body’s metabolic rate through proper exercise. And second, eat fat burning foods in greater quantity as part of a diet lifestyle change. Reducing daily calorie intake is obviously necessary to lose weight as well. What many people don’t realize is that water is essential to the fat burning process.

This is one reason why nutritionists recommend that you drink at least two glasses of clean water before having any of the three main meals in a day. But as I mentioned above, this will also help with weight-loss in that the water you drink will make you feel full after eating a little food. In other words, drinking some water before you eat will reduce your food intake because you will feel full quickly. The best thing about it is that you will not feel hungry for a while. The little food that you eat is enough to provide the body with enough nutrients, nothing more. The overall result will be quicker and safer weight-loss. Another guideline to consider is to drink 13 cups of water a day if you are a man, or 9 cups a day if you are a woman. These tips will give your weight loss plan the extra boost and increased chance of success that it needs.

Another Way Water Consumption Helps You Lose Weight

Drinking water regularly instead of sodas, beers and other sugar-rich drinks will definitely help you to lose weight. Beers, sodas and other carbonated drinks typically have a lot of sugar. If the body is not able to use up all the sugar, it will convert it into fat! These kinds of drinks are the enemy of your weight loss plan. Don’t drink your calories; drink water instead!

Drinking Water for Weight-loss – Conclusion

So, we have answered the “Does drinking water help you lose weight?” question with a resounding YES! Not only does drinking enough water before meals and throughout the day help you lose weight, but it also helps you keep it off! Maintaining a strict diet routine is not easy. The good news is that drinking two glasses of water before every meal is a habit most that most people can follow. This makes it a key part of a long term weight-loss solution!
